  Note to the Readers:

The reason college students were not used in my research as commonly done in other studies was due to the fact that the male participants would have been admitting to a felony.  Because of this, I am sure they would not have been honest and open with me about their attitudes towards women and dating as well as discussing a date rape.

Instead, the research participants were prison inmates who were primarily high school graduates or the equivalent who were incarcerated for crimes other than date rape.  I selected men who were representative of our society with regard to differences in age, race, social background, marital status, and the situation where they met the women.

Of the 18 men who responded to my question concerning their ages at the time of the date rapes, nine (50%) were teenagers, six (33%) were in their twenties, two (11%) were in their thirties, and one (6%) was in his forties.  In contrast, nine (50%) of their female victims were teenagers during the sexual assault, seven (39%) were in their twenties, and two (11%) were in their thirties.

Eleven (61%) of the male informants were white, six (33%) were African-American, and one (6%) was Hispanic.  With regard to academic levels of achievement, three (17%) of the men participating in the study did not finish secondary education, ten (55%) obtained either a high school diploma or GED equivalent, four (22%) obtained some post-secondary education either at a higher educational institution or vocational school, and one (6%) received a baccalaureate diploma.

When I asked the eighteen sexual offenders in this study how many date rapes they had committed in their lifetimes, eight (44%) had been involved with one incident of sexual aggression, six (33%) committed two sexual offenses, three (17%) admitted three date rapes, and one (6%) claimed to have sexually assaulted a women approximately fifty times.

It might be startling to readers, as it was to me, that without being directly asked about their marital status, seven (39%) of the men reported they were married and had children at the time their date rapes occurred.

From my review of research literature related to date rape, I do not recall any article suggesting that more education, economic wealth, and/or social standing inhibit a man from committing a rape.  In fact, I used an interview transcript of a male college scholarship student who was a date rapist to illustrate in my dissertation how this individual's remarks exemplified the same profile as the men in the study, namely, self-centered, non-relationship oriented, sexual intent, expectation, desiring to control the dating process, social exchange mentality, verbal and nonverbal sexual initiatives, "rape myth" advocacy, nonverbal misperceptions of the female victim's intent, degrading language toward women, etc.
