  • Conclusions

Based on data discussed in this study, the following four conclusions were drawn:

  • First, date rapists have difficulty distinguishing affection from an invitation for sex.

Until this distinction is clear, female dates may withhold affection for fear of sexual enticement by overly attentive male dates who consistently misinterpret their messages and create uncomfortable and dangerous situations for them.

  • Second, male date rape perpetrators perceive control and conquests of female victims as integral characteristics of masculinity

Jenkins and Dambrot (1987, p. 890) explain this phenomenon in the following manner:  “The social-cultural model postulates that rape and sexually coercive behaviors can be viewed as extreme forms of normative male behavior supported by customs, values, and attitudes.”

In other words, we live in a society that fosters sexual aggressiveness by men against women.  This suggests that date rapists have not adopted their viewpoints in a vacuum; rather, they have been exposed to social concepts and practices that promote these behaviors.  This socialization pattern must be abandoned if the social problem of date rape is ever to be overcome.

  • Third, female victims described by the perpetrators did not recognize the dangerousness of their circumstances soon enough to prevent date rape.

The more a woman allows her date to escalate his levels of behavior in this realm, and the more intense his positive expectations become, the more likely he is to expect or require his female victim to comply with his sexual intent.

  • Fourth, both men and women needed specific strategies for halting sexual momentum before it resulted in date rape.

Researchers on the topic have related some evidence that there truly is a point of no return.  For example, Koss and Oros (1980) asked a random sample of 3,862 college students to complete a self-report “Sexual Experience Survey.”  One of the startling findings of their study was that 23% of the males claimed they had experienced a situation of being so sexually aroused that they couldn’t stop themselves from having sexual intercourse, despite the fact their female partners resisted.  It would seem prudent for both women and men to arm themselves with knowledge and a number of strategies likely to prevent date rape situations.
